Olivia Young listened to the ringtone, frowning slightly as she tugged at the covers. She was definitely not about to get up and open the door.
"Who is it?"
Frederick Fairfax headed out.
"Mr. Feng, it's me."
A woman's voice.
Olivia Young snapped awake, her inner gossip-fire flaring to life.
Frederick Fairfax opened the door, face cold. "What is it?"
The show he was filming mainly starred men, with very few female roles. Hannah Xu was one of those rare actresses.
She was a rich second-generation, supposedly joining the entertainment industry for 'life experience,' just like Frederick Fairfax.
Hannah Xu waved. "Mr. Feng! We're throwing a beach barbecue party tonight, and we'd like to invite you."
"Wait a moment."
Frederick Fairfax went back inside, while Hannah Xu peeked furtively past the doorway.
He'd only been gone from the set for one day, but his room looked different already: fresh flowers arranged on the table, a woman's coat draped on the sofa, a female thermos on the coffee table, and even the snacks and fruits were more abundant.
Someone else was clearly living here now.
The news of Frederick Fairfax's marriage was blowing up online, but Hannah Xu couldn't quite believe it.
She had joined the industry for him. If he'd really gotten married, what was the point of idolizing him anymore? What would be her reason for staying in showbiz?
Frederick Fairfax soon returned to the door. "Alright."
The door closed with no hint of warmth.
Hannah Xu couldn't even fake a smile. Had he just gone in to ask the girl inside if she wanted to join them?
Argh! She was going crazy!
Back inside, Frederick Fairfax sat on the edge of the bed. "Can pregnant women eat barbecue?"
"As long as it's clean and hygienic, it's fine. I wouldn't risk anything from outside, but if we make it ourselves—especially if my husband does the grilling—of course I can eat it!" Olivia Young leaned against the headboard. "What do you think, honey?"
"I never said I'd grill for you! Do it yourself!"
Olivia Young replied in her soft, gentle voice, "But in front of your colleagues, shouldn’t you set a good example? Teach them how to pamper their wives?"
Frederick Fairfax loved saving face. His tough-boss act was just for show now.
"They're all single as dogs! (Single as a dog: sland, means completely single!)"
Must be exhausting and busy, working under Frederick Fairfax—who'd have time to date? What a pity.
Thanks to Hannah Xu’s visit, Olivia Young had lost all hope of sleep. She ordered Frederick Fairfax to fetch her a book.
He actually did as told, handing her the book with a grumble. "Why do I just do whatever you ask?"
"Because you spoil your wife. You’re a good man! The better you are, the more I like you," Olivia Young made a little heart with her fingers at him.
Frederick Fairfax suspected she was trying to manipulate him, but he couldn't prove it, so he just went to read over his script and deal with some work.
In the study, Frederick Fairfax had only been working for a bit when a video call from Grandfather lit up his phone.
The old man launched into him the moment he appeared on screen.
"Are you out of your mind? You dragged my granddaughter-in-law to suffer on set! With so many people at home to take care of her, you make her leave? You think you know how to look after a pregnant woman? Bring her home right this instant!"
"If I hadn’t come by tonight to have dinner with my granddaughter-in-law, I wouldn’t have known you’d pulled such a boneheaded move! Since when is a TV set the place for a pregnant woman?"
"Frederick Fairfax! Honestly, you’ve got no idea how to be a husband or a dad. Don’t you know how to cherish your wife?"
"Bring her home now!"
"And what’s with your hair? Why haven’t you dyed it back? Someday I’ll shave your whole head myself!"
Frederick Fairfax listened patiently. "Grandfather, let me plead my case."
"Plead all you want—find Lily! I want to speak with her. You’re hopeless!"
Ever since he’d married, Grandfather treated his granddaughter-in-law like treasure and tossed his real grandson to the back of his mind.
Frederick Fairfax handed the phone to Olivia Young. "Grandfather wants to talk to you."
Olivia Young held the phone, greeting sweetly, "Grandfather, how are you?"
"I’m fine! Why are you over there? This guy spends months on set. Now you’re pregnant—you should be at home where there’s help! What if something happens over there? Frederick Fairfax is useless at taking care of people!"
"Grandfather, I’m just staying for a few days to have some fun." Olivia Young pulled Frederick Fairfax into the camera’s view. "Come on, make a promise to Grandfather: that you’ll take good care of me."
"Grandfather, I’ll take good care of her," Frederick Fairfax said.
Frederick Fairfax, internally: Why am I so obedient? I’m doomed! No, I won’t listen to this!
Grandfather eyed him suspiciously. "Can I really trust you?"
"Grandfather, I’m your real grandson! Your own flesh and blood! How can you not trust me? Both you and Dad are outstanding men—always doting on your wives. I’m your genetic successor! Of course I’ll spoil my wife; that’s why I can’t bear to be apart from her," Frederick Fairfax said without missing a beat.
"Not buying it. Unless you two give me a kiss."
Olivia Young smiled: Grandfather, you’re really trying to help me out, aren’t you? But kissing is a tiny bit private... doing it in front of him would be embarrassing.
Frederick Fairfax put his finger over the camera, made a "mwah" sound in the air.
Olivia Young: ??? Wow. Nice move. Should’ve been a voice actor.
When Frederick Fairfax moved his hand away, he asked, "Grandfather, did you hear that?"
"I’m not blind. If you won’t even let me see, then we can scrap that part from the wedding, you old-fashioned fossil! One week, tops—make sure my precious granddaughter-in-law is sent home, and you deliver her personally. Otherwise, don’t bother coming back!"
Grandfather’s threats had lost their bite after all these years; Frederick Fairfax was used to it. He vaguely agreed and hung up.
"I think Grandfather doesn’t love me anymore..."
Frederick Fairfax sat on the bed. "Olivia Young, why do you think he’s changed so much? He treats you far better than me."
"Grandfather’s just acting normal. I’m your wife. It’s only right for you and your family to treat me well, isn’t it?" Olivia Young said calmly. "If you're really bothered, maybe I should just go home now?"
"No! You can't leave!"
Olivia Young needed to be with him.
"So who’s the clingy one now?"
"Not me, that’s for sure."
Frederick Fairfax flat-out denied it and suddenly got up, escaping with an excuse about work.
Night fell.
Olivia Young showed up at the beach with Frederick Fairfax, wrapped in a red coat over a black dress.
"Sis-in-law! She’s the real deal!"
"So the news online was true!"
"Sis-in-law’s so pretty—way prettier than the wedding license photo!"
"Hello, hello!"
"Hi, nice to meet you!"
Several crew members gathered around, all introducing themselves to Olivia Young.
Olivia Young greeted them sweetly. "Hello, I’m Olivia Young, Charlie’s wife."
"Charlie~"
"Aww, that’s such a cute nickname!"
"You two look perfect together—absolute couple goals!"
Frederick Fairfax pulled Olivia Young down to sit beside him and leaned in close. "What would you like to eat? I’ll go grill it."
So much for not grilling for her—turns out it was just talk.
"A bit of everything, but I want it spicy!" Olivia Young said. Suddenly, she planted a kiss on his cheek before he could react. "Thank you, darling."
Frederick Fairfax’s ears went scarlet. He stood up, nearly tripping over himself as he hurried to the barbecue.
