Lu Chaoran played the recording for him. Mo Fan was dumbfounded for a few seconds, then said, "Recordings can be faked. The police can’t convict me based solely on that, can they?"
He shot them a mocking look, sure that they didn't have any harder evidence.
Lu Chaoran gave a short laugh and retorted, "Just remember the saying: ‘paper can’t wrap up a fire’—You really think you can cover up everything?"
Mo Fan shrugged indifferently and even chuckled. "Then show me your evidence."
"If we can’t find the proof, then I’m afraid you'll have to stay here for the night, Mr. Mo," Lu Chaoran replied coolly. "We’ll let you go tomorrow if that’s the case."
Lauren Shaw spent the whole day at the hospital before finally returning to Lanyue Residence. Yancy Shaw carried her over to the sofa, then headed into the kitchen to make dinner.
Lauren Shaw walked to the kitchen door and quietly watched him work. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, and the warm light made him look especially gentle and comforting. He was a pleasure to behold.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Yancy Shaw turned and gazed at her, his eyes soft.
Lauren Shaw loved when he looked at her like that. She walked over and leaned by his side, her voice sweet and soft, "What delicious food are you cooking up today?"
"All your favorites," Yancy Shaw answered with a knowing smile—he knew her tastes inside and out.
Worried that she might get tired from standing too long in her current state, Yancy Shaw gently urged her back to the sofa, turned on the TV, and let her rest. On the screen was a news segment about them sampling materials at the factory.
She had to admit, Sophia Chandler moved impressively fast.
"The people spreading these rumors are really vile," Lauren Shaw muttered.
It's easy to start rumors, but so hard to clear them up—if they hadn't gone to the factory for samples, the accident never would’ve happened.
Yancy Shaw’s eyes darkened, but Lauren Shaw didn’t notice the sudden chill in his expression.
"Who do you think is behind this?" she voiced her suspicion.
First there was the clothing scandal, then the car accident—linked together, it was just too suspicious.
Yancy Shaw took a moment to compose himself. "Whoever it is, I won’t let them off."
His tone was chillingly stern. Out of Lauren Shaw's view, his fists clenched tightly at his sides.
"Are you hungry? Dinner’s ready, let’s eat."
Lauren Shaw rose from the sofa, just as her stomach rumbled.
Yancy Shaw let out a low laugh and served the food.
At the dinner table, Lauren Shaw was more than satisfied savoring Yancy Shaw’s cooking.
Truly, good food heals everything.
Yancy Shaw was a rare find among men—handsome, skilled in the kitchen, and, above all, attentive and gentle. She felt like she was holding a winning lottery ticket.
"Mo Fan and Mandy Snow were both taken in today," Yancy Shaw said airily.
Lauren Shaw looked at him in surprise. "They were arrested? What for?"
Always eager for juicy gossip, Lauren Shaw didn’t want to miss this hot scoop.
Yancy Shaw just replied with two words: "For murder."
Lauren Shaw was stunned. Murder? Could it be...?
"Is it related to Eva Snow’s death?"
With that suspicion confirmed, a cold chill crept down Lauren Shaw’s spine.
"Eva Snow was her niece—how could Mandy Snow go through with it?"
Was it really possible to be so heartless for personal gain?
"She didn’t actually do it—but she knew." Yancy Shaw’s tone was flat, as if describing something entirely unrelated to him.
He'd long since grown accustomed to the Snow family’s cold-blooded ways. He’d always known Mandy Snow was tied to Eva Snow’s death, just hadn’t had hard evidence before.
Lauren Shaw, shocked and bewildered, asked, "But why would Mo Fan kill Eva Snow?"
"She must have overheard a secret, so they chose to silence her."
Whatever the reason now, the fact remained: a life had been taken, and they had to make sure the crime was pinned on them.
After a sigh, Lauren Shaw remembered something the factory manager told her. She relayed his exact words to Yancy Shaw.
"Something’s fishy here." Sometimes, a woman's sixth sense is incredibly accurate. Lauren Shaw felt there was something suspicious about the man caught on the security footage. Before leaving, she’d asked the factory manager to send her a photo, and the more she looked, the more familiar he seemed.
"Why do you say that?" Yancy Shaw asked.
"Normal people don’t just wander into a factory warehouse unless they’re up to something. It was lucky the security guard found him in time, or who knows what might’ve happened."
Lauren Shaw laid out her suspicions clearly and logically.
Yancy Shaw smiled approvingly, "My darling is so clever."
She was used to his praise. "Do you think I’m right?"
"You’re spot on. That man is Mo Fan’s personal assistant—I’ve seen him before," Yancy Shaw said after looking at the image on Lauren Shaw’s phone.
Realization dawned on Lauren Shaw. "I thought so! No wonder he looked so familiar."
Maybe she hadn’t looked closely before, but when she first saw him, he seemed like a stranger.
"On the day Eva Snow died, surveillance didn’t catch Mo Fan or Mandy Snow on the scene, but I bet the assistant was there," Yancy Shaw continued. "Mo Fan probably never expected we’d investigate through his assistant."
Shuyun Moore pulled the surveillance from the night Eva Snow died. Sure enough, Mo Fan’s assistant appeared on the floor where Eva Snow fell.
At the police station interrogation room.
Mandy Snow sat there, face as pale as a ghost. Unlike Mo Fan, she couldn’t stay calm. Maybe out of guilt, she kept her head down, unable to meet the officer’s eyes.
"These two are pretty stubborn, still refusing to confess," Zhao Jiang grumbled to Lu Chaoran.
Lu Chaoran crossed his arms, relaxing back in his chair. "Let them keep it up then. No way people that cocky won’t slip up somewhere. What's the intel?"
"No sign yet of a motive for Mo Fan to commit murder."
Lu Chaoran pressed his lips together and remained silent.
Just then, his phone rang. Seeing the caller ID was Yancy Shaw, Lu Chaoran couldn’t help but smile a little.
He stood up and stepped outside to take the call.
"I’ve sent you the info. Check your inbox," Yancy Shaw said, hanging up before Lu Chaoran could reply.
That guy was straight to the point as always.
Yancy Shaw had just handed over files from Mo Qinglin—full dossiers on Mo Fan’s assistant.
Turns out they’d been chasing the wrong lead all along. Of course Mo Fan wouldn’t dirty his own hands; he’d only trust his closest confidant to do the job. No wonder they’d hit a dead end.
Watching Lu Chaoran’s excitement, Zhao Jiang quickly asked, "Where are you going?"
Without turning around, Lu Chaoran called out, "To make an arrest!" as he dashed out.
Mo Fan lounged comfortably, glancing at his watch now and then. The smirk on his lips grew. If they couldn’t get evidence against him, the law said he’d have to be released within 24 hours.
The door opened, and Lu Chaoran entered.
Mo Fan sneered, "Officer Lu, did you find your evidence?"
Lu Chaoran said nothing, pulling out a chair and sitting, staring straight at him.
Mo Fan grinned, triumphant. He was sure they’d come up empty-handed.
"Your time’s almost up. Next time, don’t arrest people without proof. It’s a waste of everyone’s time—especially mine, and mine is expensive. Don’t worry, once I’m out, I’m definitely filing a complaint to your superiors."
