Olivia Young glanced behind her—nothing there at all.
She sighed.
Just scaring herself, as usual.
Her tension eased. She looked down and teased the baby.
Suddenly, a pair of arms wrapped around her from behind.
“Ah!”
Frederick Fairfax rested his chin on her shoulder. “Was it really that scary?”
“Yes~”
“You don’t want to work at my company? Fine, I respect your wishes—you’re free to work wherever you want! But there’s still plenty of empty office space in the Feng Corp campus. Have your mentor move the firm into my building—no rent, utilities all free!” Frederick Fairfax just wanted to be closer to his wife.
What was wrong with that?
Spending a little money just to see his wife every day—pure bliss.
“No.”
“Olivia Young! Could you at least think about it before turning me down?”
Was his suggestion really not worth any consideration?
Immediate rejection!
He was getting mad now.
He might even lose his temper.
“Our law firm has been at that location for years. Everything’s going great—why move?” Olivia Young turned to him. “Don’t entertain such ridiculous fantasies, okay?”
With his wealth, what could he possibly not accomplish?
And yet, that’s what he wanted.
Back then, he never would’ve imagined Olivia Young was the woman from that night.
Even less that she was carrying his child.
Her morning sickness—it was all because of the baby inside her.
But Olivia Young, once she had him, didn’t seem to cherish it anymore.
When she was still pregnant, she’d flirt with him every chance she got.
But now?
She was starting to find him clingy.
He felt the urge to cry.
They said online that a man’s tears are a woman’s aphrodisiac.
Would Yu Yue get aroused if he cried?
Well, first he’d need to get rid of the little “third wheel” cuddled in Olivia Young’s arms.
But Olivia Young left the room with their baby anyway.
Frederick Fairfax clenched his fist. Damn!
He brought this daughter into the world himself, so he really couldn’t just send that little third wheel away.
Olivia Young nursed and soothed the baby in the nursery. Mother and daughter lay side by side, falling asleep together.
Frederick Fairfax waited and waited on the sofa but couldn’t hold out any longer. He got up to look for them.
In the nursery, mother and daughter lay there—soft, chubby faces, so endearing.
He pulled out his phone and snapped a few pictures.
Then, quietly, he lay down behind Olivia Young, slipped an arm around her waist, and breathed in her scent.
A gentle trace of milk fragrance lingered.
Better enjoy it now; once the baby’s weaned, he wouldn’t get to smell this again.
Frederick Fairfax’s fidgeting woke Olivia Young, who hadn’t been sleeping too deeply.
She elbowed him gently. “Go back to our room.”
“No rush. Let me have a kiss first…”
Olivia Young covered his mouth—there were cameras everywhere in the nursery. She definitely wasn’t up for a live broadcast.
One look from her was all it took; Frederick Fairfax understood and scooped her up, carrying her out.
Olivia Young, still half-asleep and dazed against his chest, started fumbling with her hands. “That night, out of all those people, I picked you just by your physique—still feels nice to touch.”
“Then just admit you fell for me at first sight!”
“But I didn’t even see your face. How is that ‘love at first sight’? I just wanted to have a baby…”
“A baby?”
Wait, what?
Frederick Fairfax stopped and looked down at her. “So it wasn’t that you fell in love with me at first sight, got swept up by my looks, and let yourself get tangled up with me all night? You wanted a child and picked a man at the party to be the father. So what am I to you? Just a tool?”
Olivia Young blinked, innocent as can be.
Crap!
She’d let something slip—now Frederick Fairfax was getting suspicious.
“No, that’s not it… let me explain!”
Frederick Fairfax carried her into the bedroom, closed the door, and in long strides tossed her on the bed, his tall form looming over her.
His slender fingers traced her jaw, his eyes cold and dark. “Go on, explain. I’m all ears, Olivia Young—let’s see how you spin this!”
“Hubby, you look so handsome from this angle!”
“How did I get such a good-looking husband?”
Frederick Fairfax gave a half-irritated, half-amused snort, and leaned in for a fierce kiss. “Flattery’s not getting you off the hook! Explain!”
Olivia Young hooked her arms around his neck, her pale fingers wandering across his face and throat. “It was just a slip of the tongue. It’s because of you we have our precious Yana.”
“No, no, no! You just said you only wanted a baby. You didn’t want a husband. Is that why, when you realized it was me, you kept it a secret?” The pain was clear in Frederick Fairfax’s voice.
He lowered his head, burying his face in her shoulder.
His voice was hoarse. “Should I be grateful? That I was the one you picked to be the father? If I hadn’t shown up that night, who were you planning to choose?”
“Olivia Young, you really take advantage of me!”
Olivia Young gently patted his back. “But have you ever thought about why I wanted a child in the first place?”
Why indeed?
She was only twenty-three last year.
So young, so dazzling—a goddess in every sense, the pride of the Young family, admired by countless rich young men in Beijing—everyone’s dream girl.
What possessed her to want to be a single mother?
“Because… you like kids?”
Olivia Young was speechless. Why was he smart one moment and clueless the next?
“Yu Yue, why then?”
“I have no idea. Tell me.”
Only now did Olivia Young understand why so many movies and novels have the leads hiding things from each other, quietly working through problems alone.
She used to curse them—why couldn’t they just be honest?
Couples should face life together.
But they wanted to protect their loved ones. Just like she wanted to protect hers—Frederick Fairfax, her father Quentin Young, her daughter, her family.
A fictional world?
Ridiculous!
That whole ‘jumping off a building in the end’ plot—who would believe it?
“Because when I saw you, I suddenly wanted a child.” Olivia Young’s smile was coy and enchanting. “Before I met you, I never even thought about having a baby.”
Frederick Fairfax’s face instantly brightened, a smug grin threatening to split his cheeks.
He accepted her explanation—just like that.
So easy to please.
“But… what about Grace Gordon? Did you ever picture a future with him?”
Uh, no way!
That would’ve ended in disaster—probably fallen off a building and splattered on the ground.
“No, not at all! Back then I was just young and naïve…”
“And before, when you brought him water—if I’d asked you for one too, would you have given it to me?”
“I only bought two bottles. One for Grace Gordon, one for you. What would I have had to drink?” Olivia Young had certainly noticed Frederick Fairfax back then.
His and Grace Gordon’s battle for campus heartthrob lasted from the first day of school to after graduation—with no clear winner.
But after Frederick Fairfax’s debut, he triumphed—massive fanbase. No contest.
“I could have drunk your leftover water,” Frederick Fairfax mumbled, ears turning red. “I wouldn’t have minded.”
“Frederick Fairfax, did you like me all along?” Olivia Young laughed. “Were you secretly in love with me too?”
In the original novel, there were plenty who had a crush on her, but Frederick Fairfax had only ever popped up when Annabelle Winters and Grace Gordon were together—never any mention of him having a crush on her.
Frankly, in the book, the ‘love-struck puppy’ types that helped her out never included Frederick Fairfax.
“No way! I never had feelings—I wasn’t interested in any girl back then, let alone fighting someone for their childhood sweetheart. You two looked so close, so why would I want to pine for you? Crushing on someone I could never get? No way, absolutely not…”
He kept denying, then buried his face against her chest, mumbling, “If only we’d grown up together as childhood friends…”
