Zhu Xun grabbed Shang Min, signaling her to say less.
The group watched as Zhu Yurou was taken away by the police.
Sophia Chandler observed it all with cold detachment. As a member of the Zhu family, all she could say in response was a dry, sarcastic 'Heh.'
Well, at least things will be peaceful at home now. Time to go back to my room and sleep.
She glanced back, noticing that Hugo Pierce was standing right behind her.
Out of courtesy, she greeted him, “Good evening.”
Hugo Pierce returned her smile politely. “Good evening.”
Huh, that’s rare. The one time I greet him, he actually replies—looks like the sun really did rise in the west today.
Downstairs, Shang Min was still crying and complaining. She pounded on Zhu Xun’s chest. "It's all your fault! If it weren't for you, Xiao Rou would never have done such a foolish thing!"
Zhu Xun, angered by her assault, shoved her away without holding back. “You’re insane! If she was going to do something like this, why didn’t you stop her?”
Shang Min wasn’t about to back down and screamed, “I'll fight you to the end!”
Sophia Chandler found their marital brawl far more entertaining than going to sleep.
Hugo Pierce cast an icy glance at the fighting couple downstairs, then turned and headed back to his room.
At the hospital.
Deep into the night, when everything was silent, Yancy Shaw sat at the bedside, watching the sleeping figure. His eyes were deep, like rippling lake water.
Lauren Shaw must have been exhausted; she slept soundly through the night.
Yancy Shaw sat by her side for a while, then quietly got up and left the room.
The hallway was deserted, completely still.
He walked to the nearest vent, glancing at his phone and seeing several missed calls—all from Lu Chaoran.
Afraid of disturbing Lauren Shaw in the hospital room, he hadn’t answered earlier.
After a moment’s thought, he called Lu Chaoran back.
As soon as the call connected, he asked, “What’s the situation?”
“Mo Fan’s a sly old fox. He lined up a scapegoat well in advance.”
Of course—if Mo Fan had managed to keep his underground dealings going for so long, he’d have to be cautious.
“Who’s the scapegoat?” Yancy Shaw got straight to the point.
“Yvonne Sung.”
In the interrogation room, Yvonne Sung sat with his head bowed, keeping silent no matter how many questions were thrown at him.
The door opened and Lu Chaoran entered, sitting down directly across from him, getting right to the heart of the matter.
“Tell me—who ordered you to do this?” Lu Chaoran fixed him with a roguish grin that would never fit the image of a police officer, if not for the uniform.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Tch, stubborn as a mule.
The officer beside him couldn’t hold back, barking, “Quit pretending! We’ve already caught you—so what are you waiting for? Confess!”
Yvonne Sung replied without hurry or heat, his voice neutral: “I’m in charge of this batch. Isn’t it normal for me to be there? Unless the police plan to sentence people to death without even doing a proper investigation?”
“Don’t try to muddy the waters. We found contraband in this shipment—you still want to say it’s got nothing to do with you?”
“I genuinely have no idea what you’re talking about. What contraband?”
“You—”
Lu Chaoran pressed a hand on the other officer’s arm, telling him to hold back. You couldn’t force the truth out of someone like this anyway.
“Mr. Su, you say you know nothing—let me ask you, do you at least know where the goods came from?”
Yvonne Sung’s expression flickered for a brief moment, but he quickly composed himself.
“This shipment came in from abroad. As for the contraband you’re talking about, I have no idea. I didn’t even get a chance to check the goods before you detained me.”
His tone clearly held a hint of dissatisfaction.
Lu Chaoran didn’t get angry. Instead, he smiled, “Whether you know or not isn’t important. Since your company sent you to handle the shipment, they must’ve had their reasons. For now, I’m afraid you’ll have to make do and cooperate with our investigation.”
Yvonne Sung snapped, “You have no proof—what right do you have to hold me here?”
Lu Chaoran replied unhurriedly, “Don't worry. Once the investigation is complete, the police will clear your name if you’re innocent.”
With that, he left the interrogation room.
Yvonne Sung sat in darkness, his eyes clouded. This batch had been handed to him by Xue Qiang, but the Snow family was a mess now. Fang Lin couldn't get over Eva Snow’s death and was in tears every day, while Xue Qiang now spent all his time comforting her, paying no attention to the business.
Yvonne Sung had thought this was his chance—while Xue Qiang was distracted, he could cement his own position at Wanrui. But he never imagined he'd end up walking right into someone else’s trap.
The next morning, Lauren Shaw woke feeling much more refreshed.
When she opened her eyes, she saw Yancy Shaw sleeping by the bedside. He probably hadn’t closed his eyes all night; dark circles showed under his lashes, a scruffy patch of stubble on his chin. He was still in yesterday’s clothes—looking unusually disheveled.
She couldn’t help but sigh softly.
Yancy Shaw opened his bleary eyes and looked at her, still half-asleep.
“Shengsheng, you're awake?”
“Yeah. Did you stay up all night?” Lauren Shaw looked at him with concern. Having grown used to seeing his usual neat and dashing appearance, seeing him so unkempt tugged sharply at her heart.
She lightly cupped his cheek, her eyes turning noticeably moist.
Yancy Shaw grew alarmed. “Baby, why are you crying? Did I do something to upset you?” He looked flustered and at a complete loss.
Lauren Shaw shook her head, reaching out to wrap her arms around his waist.
Yancy Shaw shifted position, letting her hug him. Then he enclosed her tightly in his arms.
Suddenly, the door to the hospital room was pushed open. Still, Yancy Shaw didn’t let go of Lauren Shaw’s waist; he turned and gave a decidedly unfriendly look toward the door.
Henry Mills hadn’t even stepped inside before that look froze him to the spot. He’d just wanted to check on Lauren Shaw, but judging by this atmosphere, he’d better not. Never mind, better leave them alone.
The door, after opening, quietly closed again.
Lauren Shaw craned her neck out of Yancy Shaw’s embrace, puzzled. “Didn’t I hear someone open the door just now? Why didn’t anyone come in?”
Yancy Shaw kept a straight face. “Probably just the wrong room.”
Remembering that Xiao Pei was also in the hospital, Lauren Shaw hesitated but decided to visit her.
“Which room is Xiao Pei in? I want to check on her.”
A flicker of complicated emotion crossed Yancy Shaw’s face. Lauren Shaw immediately sensed something was off. “What happened to her?” The suspicion had already taken shape in her mind—she didn’t need him to spell it out.
Arriving at Xiao Pei’s room, Lauren Shaw spotted Zhu Xun just as he was getting forced out by Xiao Pei herself.
“Get out! I never want to see you again!”
Xiao Pei’s angry voice sounded from inside the hospital room. A crowd had already gathered outside to watch the drama.
Zhu Xun, drenched from being doused with water, looked more than a little ridiculous.
Clearly embarrassed, he wiped his face and left in a huff.
Lauren Shaw looked up at Yancy Shaw, her tone gentle. “I’d like to go in and talk to Xiao Pei. Can you wait outside for me?”
Yancy Shaw frowned—he clearly didn’t want her to go in alone.
Lauren Shaw reassured him, “Don’t worry, she won’t do anything to me.”
Though he was reluctant, Yancy Shaw finally loosened his arms, letting Lauren Shaw into the room.
