The old madam was still waiting for her to continue, but Lauren Shaw fumbled with her words, not knowing how to start.
“Yancy Shaw said he doesn’t want kids for now.”
“Doesn’t want kids?” The old lady was stunned. Who doesn’t want children?
Lauren Shaw nodded helplessly. What could she do? She was just as frustrated.
Yancy Shaw had made it clear—the Shen family didn’t need him to carry on the family line; he already had two elder brothers.
Although she actually wanted to have a child with him, every time the topic came up, the pair could never agree.
“And what about you? Do you want one?”
The old lady looked at her with wise, knowing eyes.
Of course she wanted a child, but it wasn’t really her decision to make. Yancy Shaw was very careful about such matters. Even if he occasionally forgot to use protection, he always managed to avoid any accidents at the crucial moment.
The old madam could see right through her thoughts. No wonder they said elders are sharp.
“Why don’t you poke a hole in the little umbrella when no one’s looking?” the old woman whispered, giving her a sneaky suggestion.
That’s actually a pretty good idea, Lauren Shaw thought—why hadn’t it ever occurred to her before?
The two of them were lost in their lively plotting when Lauren Shaw’s mother walked in. Seeing how animated they were, she smiled and joined them. “What are you two chatting about? So happy.”
Grandmother answered cheerfully, “I was just asking my granddaughter how she’s been lately. Now that she’s married and it’s rare for her to visit, I have to make sure she’s doing well.”
Lauren Shaw’s mother chuckled. “So, do you think your granddaughter is doing well?”
The old lady carefully sized up Lauren Shaw. “Yes, she’s doing well. That boy from the Shen family takes good care of her. Our Shengsheng has found her match.”
Laughter filled the living room, warm and bright.
As if remembering something, the old lady turned toward Lauren Shaw’s father, “Didn’t Yaowen say he’d be home today? Call him and ask where he is.”
When Lauren Shaw heard that Owen Shaw would be coming home too, she brightened. “Little Uncle is coming back today?”
“Of course. I even heard he’s bringing his girlfriend,” her mother said, beaming. Of all her concerns, Yaowen’s marriage had always been the biggest. Knowing he now had a girlfriend made her happier than anyone.
Lauren Shaw was surprised. Thinking back to the woman she’d seen with Yaowen at a restaurant, she wondered—could his girlfriend be Shuyun Moore?
Noticing her unease, Mother quickly reminded her, “When your uncle brings his girlfriend home, don’t say anything careless.”
She knew those two were always trading jabs, and that Lauren Shaw’s tongue could be sharp. But today was Yaowen’s first time bringing a girlfriend home—it was important to leave a good impression.
Lauren Shaw rolled her eyes, exasperated. “Mom, do you really think your daughter is that unreliable?”
Just as she finished, they heard movement at the door. Lauren Shaw stood up and went to greet them.
There stood Owen Shaw in a crisp white suit, with a woman on his arm. The two of them made an elegant pair.
Perhaps it was the woman’s first time meeting the family, for she seemed a little nervous. Owen Shaw gently whispered for her not to worry—his family was easy to get along with.
Lauren Shaw stood on the steps, calling out warmly, “Little Uncle!”
Owen Shaw looked up, finally spotting her grinning at him. He couldn’t help but tease, “Little rascal, how did you know I was coming back today?”
“Just heard Grandma mention it. Hello, Sister Shuyun.”
Lauren Shaw grinned mischievously at Shuyun Moore, who remembered her from their brief meeting before.
Shuyun Moore answered her with a graceful smile. “Hello, Lauren Shaw.”
“Come on in, everyone’s waiting for you.”
As they entered, the Shaw family was immediately won over by Shuyun Moore’s scholarly air and gentle manners.
Lauren Shaw herself found Shuyun easy to like—she was kind and genuine, and most importantly, Owen Shaw clearly adored her. All through dinner, he kept serving her food, his eyes never leaving her, like he wished he could stick by her side every moment.
Mother Li and Grandmother exchanged meaningful glances, a knowing smile on both of their lips.
After dinner, Lauren Shaw wandered idly through the courtyard. Ever since she’d been with Yancy Shaw, she rarely came home. Walking these familiar grounds felt oddly nostalgic.
Owen Shaw spotted her outside and came out as well.
“Where’s Yancheng? Did you two fight?” Owen Shaw asked, a teasing look in his eyes. If they had, he’d probably be delighted.
Lauren Shaw shot him a glare. “Hate to disappoint you, Little Uncle—no fights. He’s just away on a business trip.”
“Oh, that’s all?”
“Sounds to me like you wish we had a fight or something.”
She stopped, hands on her hips, looking every bit the spoiled niece—a side of her that only came out with Owen Shaw.
He snorted and crossed his arms. “If you two fought, I’d be the first to cheer.”
“Little Uncle, you’re unbelievable! I’m going to tell Sister Shuyun you had a crush on her back in college!”
As soon as she said it, Owen Shaw grabbed her, “Don’t talk nonsense! That was ages ago.”
“Should I go dig out those old photos from your room, then?”
Owen Shaw’s face tightened. He reached over and lightly tapped her on the back of the head. “You little troublemaker! I treat you so well, and all you do is bring up my embarrassing stories.”
Lauren Shaw only grinned and made a funny face. “I love exposing your secrets—serves you right!”
Yaowen chuckled helplessly. “Says the girl who hid the fact that Yancheng is actually the Shen family’s third son.”
It wasn’t like she’d meant to hide it—she was pretty incredulous herself. “I didn’t even know at first,” she said. She’d assumed Yancy Shaw came from a decent family, but she’d never imagined he was from one of Ancheng’s most prestigious clans.
Owen Shaw stroked his chin thoughtfully, “That rascal sure kept his secrets. None of us knew what his family was like. Next time, I’ll make sure he drinks a few extra rounds.”
Lauren Shaw couldn’t help but laugh at that.
Noticing Shuyun Moore approaching from a distance, Lauren Shaw nudged him with her elbow. “Little Uncle, are you serious about Sister Shuyun?”
The look in Owen Shaw’s eyes as he gazed at Shuyun Moore was full of tenderness—so obvious it couldn’t be hidden. Shuyun Moore’s presence drew every bit of his attention. If this wasn’t love, what was it?
He shot back, “What do you think?”
Lauren Shaw nodded knowingly. “Of course you are! You’ve had a crush on her for so many years. If she ever finds out, she’ll be really touched.”
“You’d better not spout nonsense in front of her. Otherwise, next time, I’ll make something up about you to Yancheng.”
Lauren Shaw: “……”
Nonsense? She was just speaking the truth, thank you very much.
As they spoke, Shuyun Moore was already heading their way.
There was a gentle warmth about her, the calm grace characteristic of women from Jiangnan—one smile from her was enough to put anyone at ease.
