“So what do you want?” Yvonne Sung was out of patience. The Lauren Shaw before him seemed like a different person—her gaze toward him icy cold. Was he really so unforgivable?
Lauren Shaw lowered her eyes and lazily leaned back in her chair. Her look at Yvonne Sung was frosty and indifferent. “Why are you so worried? What could I possibly do to her?”
Realizing how agitated he’d gotten, Yvonne Sung lowered his voice. “Lauren Shaw, do things between us really have to be this way? You weren’t like this before.”
Back then, everything about her, even her tone, had been gentle. Now, not only were her eyes cold, but every word she spoke pricked like needles.
“Mr. Su, please get this straight. I’m not here today for a stroll down memory lane. Your…” Lauren Shaw paused, picking the right word, “your first love has caused me real losses. If I expose everything that’s happened today, her career will be finished.”
Yana Quinn hadn’t expected things would get this serious. When she heard Lauren Shaw’s words, she stiffened with fear.
The previous cheating scandal already meant no one wanted to cast her anymore. She hadn’t wanted to attend that design competition, but her manager had finally fought to get her in, so she’d had no choice but to go.
Realizing this, her anxiety mounted. “I was framed! This has nothing to do with me. Yuche, don’t listen to her nonsense.”
Claire Xu spoke coolly, “If it’s really nonsense, why not bring someone in and set the record straight?”
Yvonne Sung’s face darkened even further, but with so many people present, he forced himself to keep his composure.
“What will it take for you to let her go?”
Lauren Shaw let out a cold laugh. “One million. I might consider letting it go then.”
She hadn’t wanted to settle things with money, but just now she changed her mind. She wanted to see if Yvonne Sung would actually cough up the cash.
Yana Quinn couldn’t sit still anymore. She sprang to her feet, glaring at Lauren Shaw with resentment. “You said six hundred thousand at first. Why is it a million now?”
Lauren Shaw flashed a dazzling smile, deliberately toying with her—like playing a monkey for laughs.
“Fine by me. Get ready to be exposed, then. Seems the entertainment industry is about to lose a top actress.”
“Whatever, I’ll pay.” Yvonne Sung agreed without hesitation.
Once everything was settled, and they left the police station, Yancy Shaw arrived just in time.
“Are you hurt?” Yancy Shaw strode over, worry etched on his face. He looked her over from head to toe; only when satisfied she was unharmed did he relax.
“Sis-in-law’s fine, I’m the one who got hurt.” Henry Mills put on a pained expression for effect.
Yancy Shaw shot him a brief, indifferent glance before his gaze landed on Yvonne Sung.
Seeing Yvonne Sung staring at Lauren Shaw, Yancy Shaw pulled her into his arms, practically declaring his claim.
Yvonne Sung glared at him, full of hostility.
With his arm around Lauren Shaw, Yancy Shaw escorted her into the car, with Henry Mills and Claire Xu driving off as well.
Yvonne Sung stood watching their direction long after they’d gone.
It wasn’t until Yana Quinn called his name several times that he snapped out of it.
“Yuche, I’m sorry. This is all my fault...”
Her voice sounded small and aggrieved.
Looking at her frail, harmless demeanor made Yvonne Sung’s mind drift back to when they first got together.
She had worn a white coat, waiting for him outside her dorm, her nose red from the wind. She’d looked so pitiful and sweet—impossible to resist.
Maybe from that moment, Yana Quinn had burrowed deeply into his heart. He’d wanted to marry her.
But she chose to go overseas, resolute in leaving him behind. He’d felt pain at her decision. Even after meeting Lauren Shaw, his feelings for Yana Quinn never wavered.
So why was it that now he felt nothing for her? Worse yet, why did he even feel a bit repulsed?
“Yana Quinn, why did you do it?”
Yana Quinn looked at him, surprised. He had never spoken to her so seriously; his tone made her nervous.
“I just hate her. If not for her, you wouldn’t be like this. She used to love you so much, but now she hurts you and treats you like a stranger. I just can’t stand it. You deserve better.”
Once, Yvonne Sung might have believed these words. Now, they seemed hollow to him.
“Are you happy now?”
Yana Quinn’s face was blank with confusion.
She hadn’t noticed Yvonne Sung’s dark look, mistakenly thinking he was just asking whether she felt better.
She nodded. “Of course. I’m happy as long as you’re with me.”
Seeing her smile left Yvonne Sung feeling odd.
During her three years abroad, he’d often dreamed of her at his side, smiling just like this.
But now, seeing her in person, he felt nothing at all.
“From now on, don’t provoke Lauren Shaw again.”
“Got it, I know I was wrong. I’ll never do it again.”
Yana Quinn clung to his arm, looking up at him with wide, pleading eyes, trying to win back his affection.
Yvonne Sung quietly pulled her hand away. “I’ve found a place for you to stay. I’ll drive you over soon. I’ll make sure your things are sent to you.”
Hearing this, Yana Quinn froze. “Why? Wasn’t I fine staying with you?”
“You’re in the public eye. If you keep living at my place, rumors will start. I don’t want things to get messy—for your sake.”
As he said the words, Yvonne Sung hesitated. A thought struck him: if he’d treated Yana Quinn more like this back then, maybe Lauren Shaw wouldn’t have broken off the engagement. Maybe, if he’d realized earlier, he and Lauren Shaw wouldn’t be where they were now.
Tears sprang to Yana Quinn’s eyes. “Yuche, please don’t make me leave. I only have you. If you abandon me now, I might as well die.”
Her crying only irritated him. In his mind, the image of Lauren Shaw appeared—always strong, always independent, never like this.
Yvonne Sung took Yana Quinn to her new place—an apartment he’d rented for her. After telling her the code, he turned and left without looking back.
Yana Quinn ran after him, grabbing him around the waist, sobbing softly. “Yuche, I know you’re mad at me. It was my fault, I wasn’t thinking clearly. But I really love you—more than anyone. Please don’t leave me.”
Yvonne Sung sighed. “I need to get back to work. I’ll visit when I have time.”
Hearing that, Yana Quinn finally let go.
Without looking back, Yvonne Sung quickly entered the elevator.
Yana Quinn opened the door. The place wasn’t big, but it was cozy enough. Still, it was not what she wanted. She didn’t believe Yvonne Sung could really be so heartless.
She let out a cold laugh. If he were truly heartless, he wouldn’t have let her stay at his place just because she asked. Deep down, he still cared. As long as she beckoned, he’d still help her handle anything.
