The office door swung open from the outside. Seeing the two people caught in a passionate kiss inside, Henry Mills slapped his hand over his eyes. “See no evil, see no evil!”
Lauren Shaw’s cheeks blazed red, and she buried her face in Yancy Shaw’s arms.
Yancy Shaw cast an unhappy look at Henry Mills standing in the doorway. "Ever heard of knocking before you enter?"
Henry Mills shot him a teasing glance. "How was I supposed to know you two would be, you know, doing that in here?"
Tsk tsk tsk. The always-so-unattainable Yancy Shaw, caught in the act—he never thought he'd see the day.
Watching his annoyed expression at being disturbed, Henry Mills couldn’t help but laugh.
“Sis-in-law, I honestly didn’t know you were in here. Otherwise, I’d never have barged in.”
Lauren Shaw blushed even deeper, wishing she could become invisible.
“If you’ve got something to say, spit it out,” Yancy Shaw said, his face stony as he glared at Henry Mills. His eyes seemed to warn: You’d better have a good reason, or else you’ll wish you did.
Henry Mills felt a chill down his spine and instinctively took a step back. "Now that I think about it, I just remembered something urgent. You two carry on."
With that, he even thoughtfully closed the door for them as he left.
Lauren Shaw started to get up from her seat, only to be gently pressed back down by Yancy Shaw. "Shengsheng, there’s a medical training meeting in ten minutes."
Lauren Shaw nodded in understanding. “Mm, go ahead. I’ll wait for you.”
“Give me one more minute.”
Huh? For a second, Lauren Shaw didn’t quite get what he meant.
Yancy Shaw leaned in and kissed her again…
Doctors are precise with their timing. When he said one minute, he meant exactly one minute. Only when he finally let her go, satisfied at the flush of color on her lips, did he leave.
All traces of her lipstick had been kissed away, yet her lips were still rosy and glistening—a mark that only he could leave.
He glanced at his watch, lips pressed in a faint smile. “Wait for me here. We’ll go have lunch together after I’m done.”
Lauren Shaw still hadn’t recovered from that minute. Her mind was blank; the taste of his kiss still lingered between her lips and teeth…
Yancy Shaw opened the door and stepped out of the office.
Henry Mills was leaning against the wall outside. Seeing Yancy Shaw come out, he clicked his tongue a couple of times. "Who knew you could be so wild? Bringing her into the office for some fun, huh?"
Yancy Shaw shot him a cool glance. "Why not?"
Henry Mills was lost for words. "Fair enough. If you wanted, this whole hospital could be yours."
He’d grown up with Yancy Shaw and knew his personality better than anyone. If there was something he liked, there was simply nothing he wouldn’t do.
After all, plenty of eligible women in this hospital had their eyes on him. Now he was parading his wife around for everyone to see, clearly trying to shatter any lingering fantasies.
"Do you know how much showing off your relationship in front of me hurts?"
"Jealous?" Yancy Shaw replied faintly, instantly shutting him up.
After kissing Lauren Shaw, Yancy Shaw felt revitalized, as if his whole body hummed with energy. So kissing really does boost your mood.
From a distance, a man in patient garb was making his way toward them.
The moment he saw who it was, Yancy Shaw’s expression cooled.
Henry Mills didn’t notice and was still talking shop.
It wasn’t until the man in the patient clothes stood directly in front of them that Henry Mills realized something was up.
“Hello, can I help you with something?” Henry Mills asked, a little puzzled.
A new sternness crept into Yancy Shaw’s eyes.
Henry Mills began to feel uneasy—the tension between these two was palpable.
“Shen. Yan. Cheng.”
Yvonne Sung read aloud the name on his white coat badge, a mocking smirk on his lips.
“I thought you’d be some big shot, but turns out you’re just a little doctor. Is that all you’ve got?”
He gave Yancy Shaw a scornful look.
The Sung family wasn’t the top aristocracy in Ancheng, but they had enough clout—dealing with one doctor would be a walk in the park.
Henry Mills courteously tried to mediate. “Sir, may I ask which ward you’re from? I can have someone escort you back.”
“I’m talking to him. Why are you butting in?” Yvonne Sung snapped, his voice chilly.
Henry Mills scoffed. Some people really didn’t know the meaning of fear.
Yancy Shaw’s gaze was calm, but inside, he was thinking: how many punches could this guy actually withstand right now?
“I need to have a word with you.” Yvonne Sung was clearly here looking for trouble, remembering that Yancy Shaw worked at this hospital. He wouldn’t leave without saying his piece.
Yancy Shaw replied coolly, “And why would I waste time talking to you?”
Clearly, Yvonne Sung really did have something wrong with him. In Yancy Shaw’s opinion, this guy belonged not here, but seeing a psychiatrist.
Casting Yvonne Sung a brief glance, Yancy Shaw turned and walked toward the conference room.
“What are you getting cocky for? You’re just a doctor,” Yvonne Sung called out behind him, his tone sarcastic.
Hearing that, Henry Mills chuckled. “Yeah, he’s just a doctor. So what do you want?”
His expression cooled. What exactly was this lunatic hoping to accomplish—cause a scene at the hospital?
Yvonne Sung, still not fully recovered, was clearly outmatched in presence.
Henry Mills arranged for a nurse to send him back to his ward before making his way to the conference room.
Meanwhile, Lauren Shaw sat in the office when Claire Xu messaged her, asking to meet for lunch.
But she had already agreed to have lunch with Yancy Shaw. Then she realized she’d never actually hosted Claire Xu for a meal since she and Yancy Shaw registered their marriage. Well, no time like the present.
So she messaged Claire Xu, telling her she’d bring Yancy Shaw along for lunch.
After the meeting, Henry Mills sidled up to Yancy Shaw with a sly look. “You two are legally married and still haven’t invited me to a meal? What gives?”
Yancy Shaw gave him a sidelong glance. “You sure you want to play third wheel?”
“I don’t mind! Here to shine my light and warm up your little lovebirds.”
“You’re not welcome.”
“Doesn’t matter if I am—I'll just ask sis-in-law directly.”
As Yancy Shaw opened the office door, Henry Mills squeezed in, grinning. “Sis-in-law, you two got your marriage certificate but still haven’t invited me out for a meal?”
Lauren Shaw looked at him, then at Yancy Shaw.
“Okay then, let’s all go to lunch today. I just happened to invite a friend too.”
Henry Mills shot Yancy Shaw a triumphant look. The whole purpose of this meal was to get in his way—a little payback for showing off. Hmph, not his fault he was still single.
At the restaurant, Claire Xu waved when she saw them come in.
Lauren Shaw and Yancy Shaw together—what a perfect couple, a picture of striking good looks and harmony. However, who was that guy tagging along? Wasn’t he the insufferable flirt she’d seen at the hospital last time?
“Qingqing, did you wait long?” Lauren Shaw walked over, holding Yancy Shaw’s hand.
“Let me introduce you. This is Yancy Shaw’s friend, Henry Mills. You met him the other day,” Lauren Shaw said.
“I remember—he’s the flirty one,” Claire Xu remarked with meaning.
Henry Mills was baffled. Did she have something against him?
“Miss, have I ever offended you?”
Claire Xu shrugged. “I just find you annoying, that’s all.”
Henry Mills looked at her, totally at a loss. Did he ever wrong her, or maybe jerked her around when they were younger? He honestly couldn’t remember ever meeting her before.
Lauren Shaw and Yancy Shaw exchanged glances. Were their zodiac signs mismatched or something? How could they start sparring the instant they met? (NB: “Ba zi bu he”—an astrological saying meaning two people are fundamentally incompatible.)
